Place Names of South Australia - A

    Angaston

    Nomenclature

Angaston is within the boundaries of the seven special surveys claimed by Charles Flaxman in 1839 in this locality. Each of these special surveys entitled him to ask for an area of 15,000 acres to be surveyed, thus there was a total of 105,000 acres from which on 14 May 1842 he made the final selection of 28,000 acres for which he paid £28 000 in cash or land orders.

G.F. Angas lodged a plan of the town at the General Registry Office in 1857, but had earlier conveyed some allotments in 1842 after its survey had been completed by James Smith and Anthony Forster. Prior to the survey the locality was known as 'German Pass'.
