Holiday Entertainment
(Taken from Geoffrey H. Manning's A Colonial Experience)
On Boxing Night of 1862 I took my children to an entertainment at the Adelaide Assembly Rooms where Madame Lee and her talented family were introduced by the popular entrepreneur, Mr Aldridge. At the time it would have been difficult to imagine a more enjoyable treat for young folks at home during the holidays.
The dimly-lighted apartment made some of the children a little nervous at first and the great white plane that reared its lofty proportions on the platform, displaying a magic circle of light, excited curiosity as to what it concealed of what it was designed to disclose.
Speculation was, however, set at rest by a series of subjects displayed by the phantasmagoria, including several specimens of natural history, romantic landscapes and incidents in the Arctic Ocean. There were also some beautiful revolving figures and a variety of comic subjects, among which must have been the parent of 'The Ratcatcher's Daughter'.
During the exhibition of the wonders of the magic lantern there was an accompaniment of appropriate music and some good singing by a lady vocalist. Then followed a most exciting event, the distribution of no less than 200 gifts to that number of lucky juveniles, who first secured seats and prizes in this amusing lottery without blanks.
While the works of art were being distributed, the room was brilliantly lighted and then followed the charming little comedy 'without words' which used to excite the wonder of mothers and the envy of surrounding juveniles some years ago. This was followed by an exhibition of 'knowledge under difficulties' that to many a philosopher would appear insuperable; indeed, Miss Lee's clairvoyance must have puzzled the most sceptical to account for it, had not a hint of the modus operandi been thrown out for their information.
A comic act concluded the best juvenile entertainment ever produced for the gratification of young Adelaide.
