Adelaide - Bushmen's Home
The need for such an establishment is mooted in the Express,
28 July 1868, page 2a,
Register,
26 December 1868, page 2d.
On 4 January 1869, page 3d the Register reports that "An Old Bushman writes against its establishment":
-
He warns his mates against suffering themselves to become objects of charity
and urges them to help themselves by always having "a friend", and let that
friend be a good horse and a pound or two to carry you in search of the highest
wages and the best station. Support none but the best inns and respectable
landlords, and then you require no "home" save what your own good, honest
character will provide you with...

In my opinion the Bushmen's Club is only fit for old men that come to Adelaide
and have no friends, and want a quiet spell and are not particular.

The clubhouse stands on the property of Sir Charles Cooper in Whitmore Square
and contains in all 15 rooms. It is commodious, situate in a very healthy
part of the city... There is an air of home refinement about the place...
[and is] conducted on temperance principles.
