    Nomenclature

    The spelling of the name is discussed, and editorial comment made, in the Register of
    18 January 1870, page 6f.
    In a response a correspondent referred interested parties to the Encyclopaedia Britannica and Maunder's Biographical Treasury both of which render the foreign name as "Barossa" - see Register,
    28 January 1870, page 3d.

    On 31 January 1870, page 3c another person said that he was "inclined to search for the etymology in the name of Barbarossa (the terror of the Mediterranean in his day)...". Another letter on the same day lists other authorities which show "Barossa".

    Mining

    "A Legend of Barossa", a story of the discovery of local goldfields, is in the Observer,
