Insist on vengeance sharp and swift,
With one united voice,
The lash and jail - but shorter shrift
On gallows for the choice.
(A stanza from a poem in The Lantern, 2 November 1878.)

"The Lash - A Plea for the Prisoners" is in the Register, 27 October 1855, page 3e:
-
It is quite time that these American fashions, which may be tolerated in a country which sanctions a Fugitive Slave Act, should be abnegated in free and liberty-loving South Australia... To inflict physical torture is to be behind the spirit of the age.

The public flagellator, who was armed with a cat-o'-nine-tails with all the latest improvements, commenced his work, which he did in a true Bosun's style. The punishment was most severely felt by the men, their howls and contortions of visage showing how keenly they felt the appreciation of the lash.

Before the first stroke was made he began to howl and pray for mercy, and directly he felt the lash his yells were of such a shrill nature that they could be heard almost as far away as Bowden.
In the former case a birch broom was used, and in the latter the usual cat-o'-nine-tails. The punishment was vigorously applied, and the prisoners howled lustily.
(Also see Observer, 14 June 1884, page 36a.)
There was no perceptible movement of the muscles until the sixth lash when the prisoner evidently felt a little discouraged. He ejaculated "Oh! Oh My!" and trembled violently.
