The old Mechanics' Institute afforded old boys many treats, intellectually
and otherwise. Chess and draughts were games which the Governors permitted
to be played in a room set apart for the purpose. This was the occasion of
developing the talents of the best chess player South Australia has ever
privileged to claim. During 1858 Henry Charlick, a mere boy, was in the habit
of attending the old Institute in Neales's Buildings, Gresham Chambers and
there he defeated the Adelaide veterans. Subsequently he tried his hand at
playing two games simultaneously blindfolded, both of which the youth won
in brilliant style.
