Infant Mortality
This subject is discussed in the Register,

28 June 1858, page 2e,
Advertiser,

Infant mortality in South Australia is the subject of a censorious editorial in the Register on 1 May 1876, page 4e:
-
Our colony compares very unfavourably with the others... it is clearly the duty of the legislature by passing an effective Health Act to arrest this enormous destruction of life...
Again, on 6 December 1876 at page 4c the Editor of the Register castigates the authorities:
-
In 1875 the death rate in the City of Adelaide was more than 40 per cent greater than in the remainder of the colony... We cannot accept the verdict "Died by the visitation of God" when the true cause is human neglect...
(Also see Register,
9 and 23 December 1876, pages 6d and 4g-5e,
Parliamentary Papers
18/1876, 99 and
154 of 1877.)
A further attack by an incensed editor is published on 7 May 1877, page 4d:
-
That the causes of this excessive mortality are not far to seek any one will admit who has been familiar by experience with the vile stenches that pervade our streets, the utter want of drainage throughout the city, and the plague spots in the shape of foul slaughterhouses and ruinous overcrowded habitations, reeking with pestilence, which are to be found in Adelaide.

-
The mortality among infants continues to be very great, and although a slight diminution has taken place it is evident that further steps must be taken with a view to coping with this evil.

It is still difficult to get parents to see that death is better typified by the indigestible crust, the sour milk, and the unscalded bottle, than by the skeleton on a white horse careering around in search of infants he may devour.
