    Mosquitoes, Flies and Other Pests

    A remedy to ward off mosquitoes is in the Register,
    1 March 1856, page 3g:

    "I have been bitten worse than ever before since I tried his plan" was the response from a subscriber to the Register on
    4 March 1856, page 3d.
    Several amusing letters appear in the Observer on
    9 March 1872, page 4g.

    An interesting letter on colonial pests such as mosquitoes and flies is in the Register,

    The efficacy of "Mosquito Candles" is commented upon in the Observer,
    3 November 1866, page 5a.

    "Mosquitos" is in the Chronicle,
    24 January 1874, page 5a.

    On 15 May 1876 at page 4f the editor of the Register, in a conciliatory tone and with gentle humour, registered a protest against the predatory hordes of mosquitoes savaging the city and environs:

    However, a remedy to ward off this pest appears in the Register,
    17 January 1878, page 5b, viz,
    "the explosion of a small quantity of gunpowder"! on
    4 May 1878 at page 5b it is said:

    Seventeen years later he was pleased to advise that kerosene applied freely to the body was an effective deterrent - see Register,
    25 June 1895, page 5a and
    26 October 1912, page 14h.
