    Descriptive

    Nomenclature

The land on which the town stands was first leased by Robert Miller from 1 July 1851 (lease no. 147) over 104 square miles which stretched from a point 3 km south of Point Riley, south-east beyond Kadina, thence south to include Moonta, to finally rejoin the coast at Tiparra Spring. In 1857 he surrendered the lease when it was taken up by Walter Watson Hughes (1803-1887). The Aborigines called the district wadla-waru and his station became known as 'Walla-waroo', but this name was too long to be stencilled on wool bales and so it was shortened to 'Wallaroo'; it is a corruption of the Aboriginal wadla - 'wallaby' and waru - 'urine'.
