"Who Smoked First? Some Tobacco Anecdotes" is in the Register,
27 March 1920, page 10h.
A proposed ban on smoking "in the open air during the summer months" is discussed in the Observer,
4 December 1858, page 6g,
"Tobacco Smoking" in the Express,
2 June 1869, page 2b,
3 January 1873, page 2b:
- There is a clause in the Bush Fires Prevention Act for the same purpose but it is almost a dead letter, a conviction under it never being heard of. The practice of smoking in the open air, however, is as dangerous as it is difficult to be dealt with in a hot climate like this; and it would be carrying the law too far to prohibit the habit altogether... It would not be unreasonable, perhaps, and insist upon the use of covered pipes, which we have seen gone unmolested on the railroads in England where smoking, generally, is prohibited. This may seem to be a harsh interference with personal inclination, but extreme cases require extreme measures

-
With the further evolution of society, the men shall stay at home to do the household work, and the women shall be seen daily riding on the outside of tramcars in great cities, fingering not the dainty cigarette, but the sweetened briar pipe and discussing the share market. And what a happy world this world of ours will be at that time!

To hard-working women, just as much as men, tobacco is an invaluable servant. There are moments after seven or eight hours of brain-work when "a good cigarette is like the gift of a new head."... It encourages domestic good comradeship in the evenings.
