Taken from Geoffrey H. Manning's A Colonial Experience
My first visit to this form of entertainment was in 1864 when my family attended a crowded midday performance on a Saturday. The reserved seats were occupied by many families of highly respectable colonists, including a Cabinet Minister, the other parts of the pavilion being available to those of a lowlier station in the colonial hierarchy. The entertainment was most satisfactory, the feats of strength, agility and dexterity being performed by the ablest professors of the art in the Australian colonies. As athletes the Wieland brothers were superb, while the biped performers were, in fact, admirable animals, their novelty lying in the grotesque appearance and amusing performances of the trained dogs and monkeys.
The difficult acrobat feats were given with surprising ease, while the groupings were positively beautiful. The songs of the clown, with one exception, were humorous and inoffensive, and the mock prize fight on stilts was intensely comic. All the performances - human, canine and simian - passed off with great success. It was an entertainment which the young enjoyed with boisterous outbursts of mirth and the laughter of the adults was quite as hearty, if less loud..
